A few months ago, I had a friend tell me that she overheard someone speaking ill of me and that she stood up for me. I was genuinely touched by my friend’s loyalty and thanked her for her kindness. With a little surprise in her eyes, she wanted to know why I wasn’t upset with the person who made those comments about me.
Why didn’t it make me upset?
What others say or think of me definitely bother me less than it did a few years ago. Some may see it as I do not care about others or what their thoughts are. On the contrary, I have learned to care deeply because I understand!
I have understood that a person’s negative thoughts and words are a reflection of their state of mind. It is an unhappy mind searching for happiness externally and we have all been there.
“Until we learn to face our own shadows, we will continue to see them in others, because the world outside you is only a reflection of the world inside you.”
All of us create our reality through our perception. Someone else’s perception of me cannot hurt me unless I choose to make their reality mine. As long as I have developed the capability to focus my mind only on things which will help myself and others, their reality loses power over my mind.
Understanding that it is just their way of searching for happiness, we can genuinely wish them to attain a happy mind. This is the way to inner peace.
“Unwholesome thoughts can be neutralized by cultivating wholesome thoughts.”
We all get unwholesome thoughts from time to time. When I get unwholesome thoughts, I have learned to consciously observe it, release it and replace it.
When we learn to observe these unwholesome thoughts and actively cultivate wholesome thoughts, our reality becomes much sweeter. We begin to focus our minds on greatness.
